Frequently Asked Questions
How current is the data?
Police.uk updates crime data monthly, typically with a 2-month delay. For example, in December you'd see data up to October. We always show the most recent available data.
Why are crime locations approximate?
To protect victims' privacy, crime locations are "anonymised" - snapped to a nearby point rather than the exact address. This means crimes shown "on or near" a street may have occurred anywhere along that street or nearby.
Why is Scotland data limited?
Police Scotland doesn't publish data to Police.uk. Only British Transport Police crimes (on trains/stations) are available for Scotland, so crime levels appear artificially low.
What does the crime level mean?
We calculate a simple crime level based on the number of crimes in the area over the past 3 months. This gives a rough indication but isn't a scientific risk assessment - actual risk depends on many factors.
Can I see historical trends?
Yes - use the Time Period dropdown to view up to 36 months of historical crime data. Choose 3, 12, 24 or 36 months to spot trends over time. Data comes from the Police.uk open data API.
