Cheapest Petrol Stations in Edinburgh
Supermarkets consistently offer the lowest fuel prices in Edinburgh. Asda at The Jewel in Niddrie and Morrisons in Portobello are regularly among the cheapest in the city. Tesco at Corstorphine and Hermiston Gait cover the west side well, while Sainsbury's at Cameron Toll and Craigleith serve the south and north. Expect to save 3-6p per litre compared to branded stations on main roads.

Fuel Prices by Area
Fuel prices across Edinburgh vary noticeably depending on the area. The cheapest pockets are generally in the east and south-west suburbs where supermarket forecourts cluster - Niddrie, Chesser, and the Hermiston Gait retail area.
The city centre itself has very few fuel stations. The Old Town and New Town's narrow historic streets were never built for forecourts, so most drivers need to head out towards the A720 city bypass or the suburban shopping areas.
Stations along the A720 bypass are easy to access from any direction and generally competitive, especially where they sit near supermarket retail parks. The A8 Glasgow Road corridor heading west towards the M8 junction has a decent spread of options including BP, Shell, and Jet. The A1 approach from the east through Musselburgh has a few stations but they tend to be slightly pricier than the supermarket alternatives further into the city.
Why Edinburgh Fuel Costs More
Edinburgh drivers typically pay 1-3p per litre more than the English average. The main reason is distribution. Scotland's only major refinery is at Grangemouth, about 25 miles west on the Firth of Forth. While that sounds close, the onward cost of tanker deliveries across the Scottish road network pushes prices up compared to areas closer to England's larger refinery cluster near the Humber.
Commercial property costs in Edinburgh are also higher than most UK cities outside London, which feeds into forecourt operating costs. Station rents in well-trafficked locations like the bypass junctions or near the Gyle are significant overheads that get passed to the pump.
Edinburgh's Low Emission Zone
Edinburgh's LEZ has been fully enforced since June 2024, covering the city centre roughly inside the A700 and A702 boundary. It applies to all vehicle types. Older petrol cars (pre-Euro 4) and older diesels (pre-Euro 6) will be fined for entering the zone.
A handful of fuel stations sit inside or right on the edge of this zone. If your vehicle doesn't meet the emission standards, you'll want to fill up at suburban stations or along the bypass instead. The route planner can help you plan stops that avoid the LEZ entirely.
Commuter Tips
If you commute into Edinburgh from Fife, it can pay to compare prices on both sides of the Forth Bridge. Stations in Dunfermline and Rosyth sometimes undercut central Edinburgh by a couple of pence per litre, though it varies. Set the search radius to 15 or 20 miles on the map above to see both sides at once.
West Lothian commuters on the M8 or A71 should check the Hermiston Gait area before hitting the motorway - Tesco and Sainsbury's there are consistently good value. Commuters from East Lothian can find reasonable prices around Musselburgh and Fort Kinnaird before the A1 prices climb closer to town.
